  • 1802 William C. Schenck laid out “New Ark,” which was changed to “Newark.”
  • 1802 First white baby in Newark was born, Sarah Johnson, on December 6th.
  • 1806 First mail delivered from Newark by road.
  • 1806 First recorded burial takes place in April at the Old Colony Burying Ground in Granville.
  • 1808 Newark became the county seat of Licking County when it was first formed out of Fairfield County.
  • 1809 First Courthouse built in Newark.
