Howard LeFevre
Howard E. LeFevre was a businessman and philanthropist from Newark, OH.
Early Life
Howard E. LeFevre was born May 31, 1907, and lived in Ashland, OH.[1][2] He attended Ohio State University in 1929 where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering. His first job was in construction, working for the Clemmer and Noah Construction Company in Akron, OH. He would then move on to be a field engineer for the YMCA in Akron.[3]
LeFevre later moved to Youngstown, OH to help build a water filtration plant. This is also when he would meet his wife Bonner. He continued to work in Akron moving transitioning from running the produce warehouse for A&P, to working for a trucking company. He later bought his own small trucking company in Columbus, OH. [4]
Move to Newark
After learning about an opportunity in Newark, OH, LeFevre and his wife moved to the town and started the B&L (short for Bonner and LeFevre) Trucking Company. LeFevre would continue to work until his retirement in 1979.
LeFevre continued to live in Newark until his death June 30, 2008.[5]
Philanthropy and Community Service
During his time in Newark, LeFevre would be involved in many community projects. He bought the land and buildings for the founding of the Ohio State University Newark Campus. He also founded the Institute for Industrial Technology.[6]
LeFevre served as president of the Newark Rotary Club, as well as the United Appeal and Newark Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a volunteer for the Licking County Hospital Association, a lifetime member of the OSU Citizens Council and vice chairman of the Newark Campus Development Fund. LeFevre received numerous awards and honors for his work in the community including a Lifetime Achievement award, the Helping Hand Award, an honorary Doctorate of Technical Letters degree.[7][8][9]
