Dr. Andrew S. Burton

Dr. Andrew S. Burton was known as the first African American doctor in Licking County. [1]. He was born in 1893 in Brownstown, Jamaica and came to Newark from Tennessee in 1932. He graduated from Howard University in Washington D.C. in 1923 and got his medicial degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1928. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. [2]

Burton died in May 1974 and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery. [3]
