Helen Warner (October 12, 1898 - June 7, 1976) is one of the first artists in the Newark area to practice abstract art. At first, the community did not accept her style—completely opposite of the realistic style that was popular then—but as time went on, Warner had many successful gallery openings. She did not always practice abstract techniques, however. She was really inspired to turn away from her old favorite, barn paintings, in 1960 when she met her mentor, Dr. Harry Wood from Arizona State University at Oak Creek Canyon. It was Wood who realized her talent for abstract art. From there, her career in art took off. Helen Warner was married to Ora E. Warner, and together they had three children.[1]
