The Black Hand Gorge Livery began operating in 1980 on the Licking River, just below the Newark’s wastewater treatment plant. However, the business was short-lived. Just 4 years later, in 1984, the livery was put up for sale. The livery was forced out of business due to an increase in river pollution. Pacific Resins, a chemical manufacturer, had dumped 60,000 pounds of formaldehyde into the waterway, causing fish and other aquatic life to die.[1]
