Mary McClure Miller
Emerson R. and Mary McClure Miller were both prominent citizens of Licking County. The couple was married in 1947 and lived at 124 West Main Street.[1] Emerson was born in 1892 in Ohio, and Mary was born on December 29, 1890 in Cleveland.[2] Both were teachers; Emerson was also gifted in investing and stocks.[3] Mary taught both English and algebra at Newark High School and was a member of many community organizations. After eighteen years of marriage, Emerson died when Mary was 75 years old. She then became a businesswoman and bestowed $1.5 million in gifts on his behalf to the Licking County community.[4]
Their financial gifts helped fund a school in Licking County, build the Emerson R. Miller library, benefit churches, colleges, and many other organizations. Additionally, they created a fund in the name of Emerson’s parents, the William E. and Annie S. Miller Fund to give medical care to Licking County children without health care.[5] On March 12, 1982, Mayor Mary M. Lusk, named the day “Mary McClure Miller Day” to honor Mary—and Emerson’s—community contributions.[6] Mary M. Miller died at the age of 97 on March 4, 1988.[7]
