Schenck laid out “New Ark,” which was changed to “Newark.” 1802 Dec. 6 First white baby in Newark was born (Sarah Johnson). 1806 First mail delivered from Newark by road. 1808 Newark became the county seat of Licking County when it was first formed out of Fairfield County. 1809 First Court House built in Newark.
