John J. Carroll was a Newark, Ohio businessman who founded the John J. Carroll Department Store. [1]

John J. Carroll was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1860. [2] He moved to Newark, Ohio in 1886 and established Carroll and Company along with T.B. Carroll, W.M. Cooney, and J.M. Caren. [3]

Carroll married his first wife Susan Cooney when he was 25 on June 1, 1887 [4]. She died in 1897 at the age of 36. Carroll remarried, marrying Grace Frances Fleek. The two had a daughter, Jean Josephine Carroll, born July 19, 1920.

He died January 31, 1931 at the age of 69. [5]
