John McCahon was born in Ireland on November 3, 1827. In 1848, McCahon moved to the United States. While he is now known for his photography, McCahon’s traditional trade was carpentry. He became engrossed in the photography business between 1861 and 1888. McCahon operated a photography studio at 47 North Third Street in Newark, with the assistance of his daughter Blanche, who continued to operate the studio until her death in 1944.<ref>Obituary from the John W.
